Ear ossicles are defined as the three smallest human bones, connected to each other dynamically and located in the middle ear: hammer, anvil and stirrup.
Their function is to transmit incoming sound from the eardrum through the oval window to the inner ear and to amplify it mechanically. However, if particularly intense noises are present, the inner ear must be protected from permanent damage.
This is done through a reflex of muscular activity of the stapedius muscle (stapedial reflex), whereby the stirrup is held briefly and sound waves can be transmitted only partially. An additional muscle, the eardrum tensor, protects against too violent movements of the ossicular chain (e.g., when sneezing or coughing): it fits over the hammer and stretches the eardrum.
A typical pathology that affects the ossicles of the ear and leads to their stiffening with progressive hearing loss is otosclerosis. Our model represents a cast and enlargement of original ossicles by microscopic CT scan.
